WHAT DOES FLAG MEANS TO ME?

(deviantart.net)

The flag means a lot to me. It symbolizes the identity of a country. But, what does really flag means to me? Is it freedom?

I know many Filipinos died and sacrifice for our freedom which the Philippine flag today symbolizes Liberty, Democracy and our Nationality. I remember during my 3rd grade in the elementary, when my teacher let me raise the flag during flag ceremony she told me not to lay down on the ground the flag, value the flag for it has a significant to me as a Filipino, as a youth of today… Those few lines I remembered were instilled to my mind which until now I do the same to my students the way my teacher advised me.

Now, that I’m older I feel I will do the same. I realize that flag is much more than a piece of cloth, It is a flag; The Philippine Flag. It stands s for liberty, justice, freedom, and so much more. It stands for our country and disrespecting the flag down would be like disrespecting myself, my country, and my fellow Filipinos. I don’t know if other they have the same thing about respecting our flag. I hope so!

Aside from the flag as one of the symbol in our country, Philippine National Anthem is another thing to remember. The National Anthem is a familiar tune to everybody. It defines the glorious victory of brave Filipinos who are ready to die for the country and looking forwardly to Filipinos ultimate freedom. However, do countrymen value these Philippine symbols or taken for granted. How can we really define the word “Sense of Nationalism” if in ourselves we forget to realize our responsibility bested to us Filipinos in maintaining nationalism in our heart.

As a Filipino, attending the Flag Ceremony is part of our responsibility. In this way, we express loyalty and love for our country. But if you look around, you will notice that this is a rite seldom taken seriously by people. You will see many people talking to one another, gossiping about anybody or simply taking interest while the flag is being raised. Even at an inch- distance, you will not hear the song being sung. When the pledge is recited, you will only hear the words unclearly and only a few are reciting on it.

Where have our heroes gone wrong?

I guess it will help us to recall that our heroes fought bravely and died so that we may experience freedom. They sacrificed comfort and lived in exile that we may live freely with our family, our friends, our fellow Filipinos.

Maybe if they lived in our time, they would be sing the national anthem and recite the pledge with deep respect and intense love for our country. They would probably savor the taste of freedom until the last note has been sung or the last syllable has been uttered.

It’s been a long time since we have taken this practice for granted. This time, let’s give our heroes due respect to our flag and sing our national anthem with deep respect, sincerity and love. It’s the only way we can show our solidarity with them in their fight for independence.
